Biography:
Alan worked for 9 years as a solicitor with Gray & Co., Glasgow and Irving & Co., London. Prior to that he undertook the Law Society of Scotland Examinations whilist working with Ian Smart & Co. Throughout his career Alan has specialised in Welfare Law, including Social Security, Housing, Debt Law and Immigration and Asylum.
Cases:
Alan was Junior Counsel in Rosaleen Kennedy and Jean Black v. The Lord Advocate and Scottish Ministers [2008] CSOH 21 that related to the failures to date to hold an Article 2 ECHR complaint enquiry into Hepatitis C related deaths and held that the actions of the Lord Advocate and other Scottish Ministers had not been compatible with the obligations of the United Kingdom under Article 2.

Alan was also the instructing solicitor in Kacaj v. Secretary of State for Home Department [2002] Imm. A.R. 213 [2001] INLR 354.
