A prisoner "has, as a consequence of his crime, not only forfeited his liberty, but all his personal rights except those which the law in its humanity accords to him." Ruffin v Commonwealth (62, Va. 790, 1871).
"A convicted prisoner, in spite of his imprisonment, retains all civil rights which are not taken away expressly or by necessary implication." Raymond v Honey [1983] 1 AC 1.
Professor Andrew Coyle CMG will deliver the seminar and will be asking "Where do we stand on this matter in Scotland in 2011?"
Professor Coyle is director of the International Centre for Prison Studies at the University of Essex.
The seminar will take place at 5.30pm on Thursday 10 March at the Faculty of Advocates, Mackenzie Building, Old Assembly Close, Edinburgh.
Refreshments are available from 5pm. Attendance is free but places are limited. For further information please visit www.shrlg.org.uk
