The Scottish Government has announced the appointment of Mhairi Richards QC as one of two new members of the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission. The posts are part-time and held for four years.
The Commission's role is to consider alleged miscarriages of justice and if, after proper investigation, it believes that a) a miscarriage of justice may have occurred and b) that it is in the interests of justice that a reference should be made, it may refer a case to the High Court for determination.
Mhairi was a solicitor for over ten years before calling to the Bar in 1988 and taking silk in 2003. She has been instructed in both civil and criminal cases. Having an interest in the forensic aspects of crime, she has for several years lectured to students of University of Edinburgh undertaking the Certificate in Forensic Medicine & Science course.
